Thanks to the meticulous research of Registrar-General George Porter and his registry staff in the 1920s, these records are available today.

Nearly 10,000 digitised military death records are available to order online through the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) family history research portal. You can search and explore, and even order online records of those who lost their lives during the First World War.

Queensland is one of only three states in Australia to register the deaths of servicemen and women who died in the First World War.

Registrar-General Porter spent years ensuring that families of servicemen and women who enlisted in Queensland and died while on active duty overseas were able to access detailed death certificates.

The collection of hand-written entries are a sombre record of the noble sacrifice made by Queensland soldiers and nurses. BDM has released a selection of digitised casualty records from the First World War to commemorate the Queensland men and women who died while on active duty.
