1st Australian Imperial Force commemorations
This event commemorated the historic departure of Queensland troops on 24 September 1914 as part of the 1st Australian Imperial Force (1st AIF) 100 years ago.
On Saturday 27 September 2014 visitors to South Bank Parklands had the unique opportunity to see what life was like as a soldier in the First World War. The event—which coincided with Sunsuper Riverfire—was a pop-up exhibition staged outside The Courier-Mail Piazza. The exhibition brought together educational displays, artefacts from the Australian Light Horse Association and 9th Battalions Association and live performances of solider training exercises as undertaken in 1914.
In addition to the exhibition at South Bank, a spectacular commemorative ride of 83 horses from the Australian Light Horse Association was staged through the streets of Brisbane. Spectators gathered along Adelaide Street to honour the memory of the Light Horsemen in the First World War.
